About Plovdiv

Plovdiv is the second largest city in Bulgaria and one of the oldest living cities in Europe - by some sources second oldest continuously inhibited city in Europe and the sixth one in the World. With its 8,000 years history it maintains localities such as Thracian plain along the Maritsa River, Roman theater, Old Town, the creative Kapana district, etc. It was the 2019 European Capital of Culture.

Getting to Plovdiv

To get to Bulgaria and Plovdiv we recommend you to fly to Sofia, the Bulgarian Capital. However, there is a number of flights directly to Plovdiv. Alternatively you can arrive to Sofia by bus. Some European cities have direct bus lines to Plovdiv, or at least to Sofia. Using a train to and in Bulgaria is much less recommended due to the low maintenance of the railway routes.

Upon arrival to the Sofia airport you can:

1. Use the public transport from Sofia airport to the Central Bus station and further to Plovdiv.

In this case take a metro/taxi to the central bus station:

  • by metro, which will cost less than 1 euro and you have to travel from Sofia Airport to Serdika (Red line), change to Blue line, direction Obelya and travel from Serdika to Central Bus Station;
  • by taxi, which will cost you about 15 euros and will take over 40 minutes. Use only OK SuperTrans. We also recommend to negotiate and agree about the approximate price with the driver before you enter the car.

Once you are at the Central Bus Station in Sofia, you can take a bus to Plovdiv. It takes about 2 hours and costs about 7 - 10 euros. It is common in Bulgaria to buy a ticket on the spot at the bus station, since it is very difficult to calculate the time needed to get to the bus station. You can also book a ticket from Karat-S, but we do not recommend it.

2. You can also book a airport transfer or take a taxi from the Sofia Airport to Plovdiv

The second, much faster way is to take a taxi/airport transfer from the airport to Plovdiv directly, which will drive you to your accommodation and will take around 1h 30 minutes. Taxis are arranged on the spot, at the airport, or better order it in advance (e.g. Plovdid Transfers), it is normally cheaper. If you decide to take a taxi at the airport, there is an OK SuperTrans taxi booth (legitimate taxi company, such as OK Taxi) at the arrivals exit. If you decide, you can also exit the airport and hire a taxi yourself, just remember to use SuperTrans and agree about the price before you start the trip.

You can also come by car. If you come to Sofia follow the Highway Trakiya (A1), direction to Svilengrad, that leads to Plovdiv. The drive from Sofia takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Public trasport in Plovdiv

Once in Plovdiv, you may need to take a public bus or a taxi.

In Plovdiv there is a comprehensive network of bus lines covered by different companies. The public transport operates a from 5:30 AM to 11:00 PM. You can buy tickets for public transport in Plovdiv in the bus and the current price is 0.5 EUR.

Taxi fares in Plovdiv are very reasonable and any ride should be between 2-5 euros. Here are a few companies that you can use: Zeleni 359 32 6665, Perfect Taxi 359 32 6155. Maybe it is again good to agree about the price with the driver before entering the car, but in Plovdiv it's not too important.
